What local government did, 31 August – 6 September

Wake Forest's Planning Board did something unusual on 2 September: it voted 4-1 to recommend against a rezoning. The case was 14.12 acres on Star Road for a conditional-district apartment project, and the board's recommendation went to the commissioners against the applicant. Most recommendations in this record run the other way.

Holly Springs made the week's largest award, a $6.4 million generator contract for the Utley Creek Water Reclamation Facility, and adopted the Wake County Emergency Operations Plan the same night. Fuquay-Varina held four public hearings on 2 September covering two annexations, a planned unit development rezoning on Spence Farm Road and an ordinance amendment, and reviewed two redesign concepts for Library Park. Durham's council paired two consolidated annexations with planned development rezonings, at Courtyards at Oak Grove and Durham Gateway at Brier Creek.

Orange County heard a rezoning of 110 acres at 4809 Friends School Road on 4 September to let Carolina Friends School expand, alongside a hearing on $874,702 in state and federal transit grant applications. Its Planning Board took a rezoning of 78.11 acres on NC 86 North the day before, with a staff text amendment on impervious surfaces and watershed protection. The Board of Equalization and Review sat on 2 and 3 September, hearing nineteen appeals between them.

Chapel Hill's council opened a 30-day application window on 3 September for a vacant council seat, and went into closed session on the conditions of appointment. Cary's Human Relations, Inclusion and Diversity board checked in again on translating public safety information and on a review of its own board demographics, a thread it carried all summer.
