What local government did, 27 September – 3 October

Pittsboro's commissioners on Monday steered the new town hall on J.A. Farrell Street toward a gabled design, the second of three exteriors the architect brought after the board turned down a modern scheme two weeks earlier. A motion to proceed with that option and bring color alternates was seconded, and a design is aimed at the November meeting. The construction manager put the change at about 2.3% over the $10.9 million construction estimate. The same night a commissioner moved to table the Robeson Creek Park master plan until April while letting staff build the greenway, parking and restrooms. The recording ends as that vote is called.

Durham County's commissioners approved their consent agenda Monday, including the first step toward a note of up to $30 million for the Chin Page Road wastewater work and a wider study of redeveloping three Durham Public Schools sites. They also sent federal regulators objections to proposed Head Start rules and created an Early Childhood Task Force for children from birth to age three. Chatham County's commissioners spent Monday and Tuesday at a housing retreat with the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, and on Tuesday Orange County staff told the commissioners and both school boards that a property tax cap on the November ballot and new school debt will squeeze the next two budgets.

Five bills Governor Stein vetoed were on the House calendar Monday and again Wednesday, among them permitless concealed carry and limits on camping on public property. None of their histories recorded an action on either day when checked Wednesday. Holly Springs' council held a Wednesday workshop on candidate projects for a transportation bond referendum in 2027 or 2028, and on a framework for a wastewater agreement with Cary and Apex. Chapel Hill's information packet the same day carried OWASA's draft principles for dealing with PFAS in the Cane Creek Reservoir, open for comment into the fall.

Thursday's Board of Adjustment hearing in Chapel Hill takes public comment on a setback variance at 739 Gimghoul Road for an apartment over a garage. Pittsboro's Downtown Advisory Board meets the same evening on sponsorships for the tree lighting, street fair and Veterans Day, and on a downtown logo.

32 boards met across 12 governments, with 139 agenda items on file.
