What's on this agenda

Orange County's Parks and Recreation Council considers what to prioritize for discussion between October and December. It also hears an update on next month's Trails Plan workshops and weighs whether to host a hike for the state's Great Trails Day. The council takes up its one board vacancy and hears the director's report on park projects.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

A survey of council members ranked continued work on Fairview Park as the top priority for the group's discussions through the end of 2025. The council also heard that its one board vacancy, reserved for a Town of Carrboro resident, has drawn no applicants. Members said they lacked time to organize a hike for North Carolina's Great Trails State Day on October 18. They will consider hosting one next year, and staff will look into sponsoring other hikes instead.

Staff told the council that consultant Elaine Asal has taken over the county's Trails Plan after Jessica Pearson left Gensler. Two public workshops are planned for later in September, after a May round that drew more than 60 attendees and 70 online responses. Consultants on the county's Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan will join one of the sessions. The director reported that soccer goals for Fairview Park should arrive soon. The mountain bike skills course at Little River Regional Park is set to open by month's end. The county has also received a petition to name a field at Cedar Grove Park after a local leader. Design revisions to the disc golf course are continuing.

How the votes went

The council approved the August 6 meeting summary without objection; no other votes were recorded.
