What local government did, 27 July – 2 August

This was the quietest week of the summer: eight meetings, 24 items between them, and no contested vote anywhere in the region.

Durham County's commissioners carried the largest number. Their 28 July consent agenda held the year's routine $19,398,358 appropriation, and the meeting opened with a closed session on economic development incentive negotiations and the national opioid litigation. Both of those subjects surfaced in public later in the year.

Orange County ran three of the week's remaining meetings and all three were process. Its Economic Development Advisory Board held a strategic plan workshop with consultant Crystal Morphis, covering a SWOT analysis, a business survey and revised vision and mission statements. Its Agricultural Preservation Board debated revisions to the draft Agricultural Viability and Farmland Stewardship Plan and recommended members for five vacancies. Its Board of Equalization and Review heard fourteen appeals on 31 July, in what the agenda marked as its last day accepting 2025 appeals, and took a staff request for neighborhood-level value corrections. That request became the $60,972,300 in neighborhood-review reductions reported to commissioners in December.

The week's one live development question was in Cary, where the Planning and Zoning Board reviewed the 22.74-acre Alston Commons rezoning on NC 55 for consistency with the Imagine Cary plan. It would add up to 625 apartments, office space and a car wash.

10 boards met across 7 governments, with 57 agenda items on file.
