What's on this agenda

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The way outside agency funding is reviewed has changed: the county manager's office and department directors will do it instead of advisory boards, and there is a new performance agreement process. Staff said funding has dwindled and the application is demanding. The department itself applies to Chapel Hill and Carrboro for outside agency money.

One member raised a broader concern about citizen input, saying advisory boards in Chapel Hill have been dissolved and that more than ten petitions he has filed over five years went nowhere. Another gave the extra funding for take-away meals as a counter-example.

The board discussed what to put in its annual report to the commissioners, and members raised the cost of assisted living, planning for solo agers, and support for caregivers. One described a parent with dementia who did not qualify for Medicare and the monthly cost of long-term care. Staff said national assisted living companies build with tax credits that expire after twenty or thirty years, at which point costs jump, and called it a nationwide problem.

Members also discussed the proposed Fiddlehead community in the context of group homes, and staff said what matters is the zoning and what a change would permit. The state health insurance counselling programme reported on the Medicare Part D open enrolment season.
