What's on this agenda
The area agency on aging visits Orange County February 3 and 4 for its annual monitoring visit. The review covers health promotion programs, senior center operations, information and assistance, options counseling, and two grants.
The board also plans to take up the FY 2026-27 budget, which kicked off January 8. It also owes its annual report to the county commissioners by January 16, to be presented in February or March.

Meeting recap
What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes
The most concrete thing that came up was advocacy. The Senior Tar Heel Legislature alternate delegate told the board that at monthly tabling in the county's senior centers they will hand out a paper form so people can write a letter to their state legislators by hand, then send them in bulk on the writers' behalf.
The nursing home and adult care home community advisory committee, which visits facilities and reports on what it finds, is stuck at ten members against a maximum of fourteen. Applications come in, but people stop responding once they learn the role requires 32 hours of training.
A member raised concern about changing public health recommendations, immunizations among them, and what that means for older residents' health, suggesting it as a priority for one of the master aging plan workgroups. The department's employment specialist reported working with fifteen or sixteen seniors looking for work, with employer response picking up after the holidays and four or five placements hoped for by the February meeting.
Survey design for the 2027-32 master aging plan is under way with input from the plan's workgroups, aiming for completion in early May. VITA free tax help appointments opened January 12 for service running February 1 through April 15.
