What's on this agenda

Orange County's Advisory Board on Aging heard from the county tax administrator about the 2025 revaluation on 8 April 2025, and worked through its budget requests for the coming year. About 42 percent of the department's budget is federal, and the board was told the Administration for Community Living is being dismantled with the consequences unknown.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Staff set out what the department is asking the county for: language access support, particularly American Sign Language, assistive technology and community-based services training, and the take-away meal programme. If take-away meal funding changes, the department will work with Meals on Wheels to reach homebound older adults.

Construction on the Fit Lot has begun and then stopped. About $20,000 of equipment was stolen, including the canopy and fasteners, and an insurance claim is being made. The county has since received an additional $62,000 for the Fit Lot from the regional area agency on aging.

Two staff posts are vacant and the department will decide when to refill the aging transitions and volunteer specialist role once the federal and state budgets are known. The board voted to seek a one-year extension for its Senior Tar Heel Legislature delegate. Staff reported that street outreach support has improved the situation with unsheltered people at the Seymour Center, and that the department's radio show won the Southern Gerontology Society's media award across a 14-state field.

How the votes went

The March minutes were approved, and the board approved seeking a one-year term extension for a member.
