What's on this agenda

Orange County's Board of Elections met to review absentee ballots cast ahead of the 2024 general election. The board's business was staff's recommendations on which ballots to approve, plus routine tabulation and ballot security steps.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The board approved 668 absentee ballots on Director Rachel Raper's recommendation: 453 civilian, 205 overseas and 10 military, each by unanimous vote after a bipartisan review of the envelopes. It voted to disapprove 13 civilian absentee ballots for incomplete witness information; the affected voters have been contacted and given reissued ballot packages. The minutes do not record the vote count on that motion. Six more civilian ballots were held for further review because photo ID documents may be sealed inside the ballot envelopes.

Staff scanned the newly approved ballots, plus previously approved ones from earlier absentee meetings, through the county's central tabulator, bringing the running total to 1,739 ballots. The board signed a seal on the security envelope holding the counted ballots. No members of the public spoke during the comment period.

How the votes went

The board voted unanimously to approve 453 civilian, 205 overseas and 10 military absentee ballots, in three separate motions. It also voted to disapprove 13 civilian absentee ballots for incomplete witness information; the minutes do not state whether that vote was unanimous.
