What local government did, 29 March – 4 April

Garner's council took up, for a third time, a resolution consenting to Wake County Housing Authority bonds for the 171-unit Bennett North Apartments on March 31. The developer now wants 170 of the 171 units set at 60% of area median income and the whole project exempt from property tax, a shift from the affordability terms in the original special-use permit. Council also previewed two rezoning requests headed its way: a 28.5-acre tract at 7615 Ten Ten Road for 500 units of age-restricted senior living, apartments and retail, and a three-parcel rezoning on Auburn Church Road for the 226-home Village at Big Branch subdivision near an employment center.

Everything else on the week's short calendar was routine or preparatory. Wake County commissioners held a budget work session on the FY2027 operating budget and capital debt, with no figures attached to the agenda. Orange County's parks and recreation council elected officers and spent most of an hour on the draft county Trails Plan, which proposes nine ranked trail connections. Cary's senior advisory board got an update on the senior center assessment, and its Historic Preservation Month committee picked a chair and started planning May's programming. Durham County's "In Touch With Durham County" meeting published no agenda that could be read.
