What's on this agenda
Pittsboro's commissioners opened the FY 2026-27 budget on December 3 with a list of recommended projects that runs to seventeen items, most of them parks and streets. The named priorities from individual commissioners were narrower and more pointed.
One commissioner asked for a 5 percent commitment to affordable housing investment, along with better audio at board meetings, sound absorption at the Community House, composting toilets in parks, and a small area plan spreadsheet showing revenues, expenditures and liabilities so the board can see what it has already committed to.

Other requests: a Fire Tower Road connection to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, affordable housing downtown, and doing something with the space behind the shops on Hillsboro Street. The mayor pro tem raised fiscal responsibility and affordable housing. The mayor asked that staff pay, benefits and training keep the town an employer of choice, and raised downtown trolley service.
The recommended capital list covers Lewis Freeman Park, Kiwanis Park and Knight Farm Park upgrades, McClenahan Park improvements including a laydown yard, the RAFI building and baseball lights, Mary Hayes Barber Holmes Park, East Street beautification, Rock Ridge Park restrooms, general playground funding, a public works building, annual street resurfacing, the 15/501 widening and downtown streetscape, sidewalks on Town Lake Highway 87 and Salisbury Street, wayfinding signage, pedestrian crossings and ADA improvements, the RAISE project, a storm drainage culvert at Pittsboro Elementary School Road, and design work for a new town hall.
Vehicles and equipment proposed are an F-150 hybrid truck, an electric vehicle, a hook lift truck, a patrol vehicle and event barricades.
After a stormwater presentation the board asked for more numbers, resources and a prioritisation list for the budget session.
The calendar: staff develop the budget in January and February, the board holds a retreat on April 7, the public hearing is May 11 and adoption is June 8.
How the votes went
