What's on this agenda

Orange County's Parks and Recreation Council advises the Board of County Commissioners on parkland, trails and recreation facilities. At its October 2 meeting the council took up two vacant seats on its own board, the county's progress connecting to the Mountains to Sea Trail, a letter asking the state to add pedestrian signals to the Dimmock's Mill bridge, and whether the county should build a public pool or splash pad.

Staff also briefed the council on construction at Perry Hills Mini Park and a coming vote by the commissioners on a bid for pickleball and tennis courts at Fairview Park.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The council took up two motions to recommend appointees to the Board of County Commissioners: Benjamin King for the Carrboro Town Limits seat, and Shahnaz "GiGi" Rashdi for the Eno Township seat, whose current member's term expires in December. The minutes do not record how those votes went. Members also adopted their September 4 meeting summary unanimously and made no changes to the agenda.

Land Conservation Manager Chris Hirni presented the county's progress on the Mountains to Sea Trail between Hillsborough and Saxapahaw, including a stalled easement near the Cane Creek Reservoir and new connections since Alamance County hired its own trail coordinator. Staff will reformat a letter asking the state Department of Transportation for flashing pedestrian signage at both ends of the Dimmock's Mill bridge before sending it to the commissioners. The council spent more time on whether to build a splash pad rather than survey residents, naming Fairview Park and Efland-Cheeks Park as possible sites because both have water and sewer service.

How the votes went

The council adopted its September 4 meeting summary unanimously, with all in favor and none opposed. Two motions recommending appointees to the Board of County Commissioners were moved and seconded, but the minutes do not record how either vote went.
