What's on this agenda
The Orange County Board of Health approved its annual work plan and a revised 2025 meeting schedule on 22 January 2025, and heard a year's report from the health department's nutrition services.

Meeting recap
What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes
The nutrition report set out what the county offers that many North Carolina counties do not. Medical nutrition therapy covers heart disease, gestational diabetes, iron deficiency, lead levels and children's feeding and growth, going beyond what a provider can do in a normal appointment. Medicaid and Medicare pay for it only for diabetes and chronic kidney disease, so the department uses a sliding scale that brings the cost down to $20. About half of those patients are maternal or child health patients, 74 percent need language services, and 78 percent of that is Spanish.
The diabetes self-management programme runs ten hours; in a recent cohort every participant said they learned something and that it improved their motivation. A Spanish version runs at least annually with simultaneous interpretation. The year-long prevention programme produced average weight loss of about 5 percent and more than seventy extra minutes of weekly activity. Staff hope to add gestational diabetes classes once childcare can be arranged, and suggested the YMCA or local churches.
Board members added three things to the work plan: a nonprofit board a member sits on, the regular reports the board receives from environmental health services, which regulate food, lodging and pools and permit development in the county, and the names of the board's four committees.
In public comment, staff asked the board to consider filing a comment supporting the FDA's proposal to lower nicotine levels in combustible tobacco, with the comment period open until 15 September.
How the votes went
Four motions carried without dissent: the agenda, the November minutes, the annual work plan with revisions, and the 2025 meeting schedule with the board retreat moved to 15 March.
