What's on this agenda

Fuquay-Varina's town board took on more than 4 million dollars in state and regional road, sidewalk and greenway money on 6 October 2025, including 2,847,000 dollars from a metropolitan planning grant for pedestrian improvements between Lincoln Heights and Bridge Street. It also settled a property purchase for 450,000 dollars to site a future elevated water tank.

Two residents used public comment to return to a half-demolished house on Longfellow Street, and the mayor called the builder's handling of it unacceptable and embarrassing. Every vote was 5-0. GoRaleigh told the board its express bus to Raleigh ends on 2 January 2026 and is replaced by an on-demand service.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The Longfellow Street site brought the sharpest exchange. One speaker objected to the construction itself, the other to the rezoning that allowed it. The town attorney reported the owner has hired a new general contractor, that a demolition permit was pulled and part of the house taken down, and that no permit has yet been filed to continue building. He warned that litigation would be slow and that finishing the work is the priority. The town manager said the owner must hire an independent structural engineer to confirm the exposed wood framing is still sound, and that if it is not, the framing comes out and the project starts over. The mayor directed staff to hold regular on-site meetings with the owner and contractor to fix a timeline and keep the site clean, and to fine immediately where warranted.

GoRaleigh presented the replacement for the FRX express route, which runs four buses each way on weekday peaks between South Park and downtown Raleigh with a stop at Wake Tech. FRX ends 2 January 2026 and MicroLink, an on-demand service booked by app or phone, starts 5 January on the same funding and connections. Fares are free for the first year, then match the old FRX rate. On the road agreements, board members asked how the town keeps winning regional money; staff explained the planning organization scores applications on connectivity, cost ratios and proximity to schools and commercial centers, and that the town picks projects it expects to score well.

How the votes went

Every item passed 5-0, including the consent agenda in a single motion and each of the five separate road, sidewalk and greenway agreements. Nothing was removed from consent.

From the published minutes.

Who spoke

2 members of the public spoke.

  1. A resident of Bridge Street told the board he was disappointed in the stalled construction at two houses on Longfellow Street.
  2. A resident of Longfellow Street raised the same construction and also objected to the town having rezoned the property to town center residential.

Two speakers, both on the same half-built houses on Longfellow Street. The mayor, town attorney and town manager answered at length and the mayor directed staff to meet the owner and contractor on site regularly until the work is finished.

Read from the records the government published after the meeting. Members of the public are private residents and are not named or indexed.
