What's on this agenda
Orange County's transportation board was asked on 30 September 2024 to recommend two plans to the commissioners for October: a Short Range Transit Plan for 2025 to 2030 and an updated Safe Routes to School plan. The transit plan, by Nelson\Nygaard, splits the Hillsborough Circulator into two routes running every 45 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., adds a Mebane circulator, reorganizes on-demand service into four zones, and aligns the Orange-Chapel Hill Connector with GoTriangle Route 420. It projects a transit budget of about $3.8 million a year. The staff memo lists reinstating the Orange-Alamance Connector as a short-term step, while the plan itself proposes discontinuing it and bringing back a redesigned route in the long term.
The Safe Routes to School plan, by WSP, covers 13 schools within two miles of each, names NC 86, Orange Grove Road and Richmond Road as the most dangerous corridors, and ranks crosswalks, sidewalks, traffic calming and paths by need. It carries no cost estimates. Staff also report on NCDOT projects, among them the $236.5 million I-40 widening and the Hillsborough passenger rail station. Public comment is item 3, and emailed comments are read aloud.
