What's on this agenda

Orange County's Commission for the Environment recommended two applicants for membership on 10 March 2025, voted to pursue a youth delegate seat, and set up how its subcommittees will divide the State of the Environment report.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The commission recommended two applicants to the county commissioners, each unanimously, and agreed to pursue a youth delegate, with one member abstaining after staff explained the process.

The water subcommittee split its section four ways: groundwater quantity, groundwater quality, surface water quantity and quality, and emerging issues, with each subsection carrying background, the current state, trends, conclusions and recommendations. Members were to bring high-level summaries and possible data sources to the next meeting. The air and energy subcommittee discussed trends likely to matter over the next few years and how to get the data it needs, and reported that an EBURP grant is back on. Members agreed some topics do not fit in one subcommittee and should be handled jointly.

In updates, a member reported that UNC withdrew its request to test a new fuel at the cogeneration plant, saying the pellets fell short of requirements, and another noted a community meeting organised against the proposed Union Grove amphitheatre.

How the votes went

Five motions carried: the February summary, two membership recommendations, pursuing a youth delegate with one abstention, and adjournment.
