Cary's historic preservation commission learned on January 14 that the state has closed off the route it was pursuing for the Nancy Jones House. North Carolina confirmed the house's historic marker application had already been denied, and that current state criteria no longer allow markers for individual buildings — the programme now covers people, events or places of statewide significance. The house would only qualify if the case were rebuilt around a person of statewide importance.

The commission spent most of the meeting on its own marker programme instead, working through draft policy on inscriptions, format and location and then choosing among design options from the sign fabricator.

On design, commissioners preferred single-post mounting, consistent design across markers, and larger fonts for legibility, while allowing flexibility for location — a greenway marker and a roadside marker are read differently. They also considered whether to permit metalphoto panels, a photographic image on anodized aluminium. The draft policy would have staff write all final marker text for commission approval, restrict text to documented historical fact, and require a full new application and fee to revise a marker once approved.

The commission formed a Historic Preservation Month committee, with three members volunteering, and pushed the formation earlier in the year to leave planning time. Ideas floated included events inside recognisable historic homes, an expanded downtown scavenger hunt, partnering with businesses in historic buildings, regional collaboration with neighbouring preservation groups, and tying into the national 250th anniversary.

Staff reported that a minor certificate of appropriateness was approved for removing the Page-Walker willow oak, NCDOT has reinstalled the Green Level Historic District signs, permits for the Dr. John Pullen Hunter House are under review, the Certified Local Government annual report has gone to the State Historic Preservation Office, and the CLG grant cycle closes April 30. The council liaison said the cost of the Nancy Jones House restoration and a historic preservation master plan update is being evaluated for next year's budget request.

How the votes went

Forming the Historic Preservation Month activity committee was approved unanimously on a motion by the chair, seconded by Rachel Palisin. The agenda and the December 10 minutes were adopted without objection.
