What's on this agenda

Orange County's Commission for the Environment plans to vote on a new environmental recognition award and forward it to the Board of County Commissioners. It also expects to consider recommending a new appointee to the commission.

The commission will review the timeline for scoring this year's Climate Action Grant applications on a new platform, Submittable. It will also discuss progress on the State of the Environment Report and break into air, water and land subcommittees.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The commission postponed voting on new-member nominations to a later meeting, but voted unanimously to move forward with a new environmental recognition program, named the Ripple Award, with applications due February 1, 2026 and winners announced during Earth Week. Staff said the Human Relations Commission is still scoring this year's Climate Action Grant applications and will notify the commission when it is ready to score. Members broke into their Air & Energy, Water Resources, and Land Resources sub-committees to review progress on the State of the Environment Report; water quantity sections are nearly finished while surface water quality and PFAS data remain largely uncollected. Staff also flagged an October 4 Drive Electric Month event and September 24 and 28 Trails Plan workshops.

How the votes went

The commission approved the August 11 meeting summary and voted unanimously to proceed with creating the Ripple Award environmental recognition program. It deferred voting on new-member recommendations to a future meeting.
